Explanatory note

    the top(land) of the rod?

Is féidir talamh slán a dhéanamh de gurb é an leagan fada seo den ainm (1627–1821) a bhí in úsáid fad a bhí an Ghaeilge á labhairt anseo.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:

    1. 2. Anseo timpeall freisin a bhí 1549 ‘Emelaghe’, 1602 ‘Emelagh’, srl. < An tImleach “the marginal land”.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
I mBarr na Slaite Uachtarach léirítear Tobernacrew SO < Tobar na gCraobh (??) “the well of the branches”. Caolseans go bhféadfaí na Croiche “of the (Holy) Cross” a chur san áireamh freisin, i bhfianaise 1557 ‘Ballynecloe’ < Baile na Cloiche (#28106) i gCuileannach. Féach an t-ainm Tobercro SO in bf An Charraig (#25517) i dtuaisceart Chill Dara, ar giorrúchán é ar 1849 ‘Tober Crogh-Neeve’ < Tobar na Croiche Naoimh (féach Wilde, The Beauties of the Boyne 45).
