This townland was once part of an area called Seanchluain, 'old pasture', mentioned in Peyton Survey (1586) 99, Fiant 5782, Civil Survey 123, Civil Survey 280, etc. The English name is first attested in a land deed from 1738 as 'the forty acres near Charleville'
