Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the hill of Croma(i)l
Ní léir brí Croma(i)l; dhealródh sé gur logainm ann féin é. Mheas Mac Spealáin, North Munster Antiquarian Journal 3 150, gurb é an sloinne Gromail -- foirm eile de Cromail, an sloinne Sasanach Cromwell -- atá le fáil i gCo. Luimnigh chomh fada siar leis an 13ú haois atá i gceist ann

  • Gaeilge

    the hill of Croma(i)l
The meaning of Croma(i)l is unclear; it would appear to be a separate placename. Mac Spealáin, North Munster Antiquarian Journal 3 150, suggests the surname Gromail -- another form of Cromail (the English surname Cromwell) found in Co. Limerick as far back as the 13th century
