Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
back(-hill?) of (the) black ring-fort
Tá tagairt Gaeilge ón 16ú haois a thaispeánann gur cúl seachas cúil, 'corner, nook', atá sa chéad mhír. Is cosúil gurb é Lios na dTréan Dubh, lios ollmhór sa bhaile fearainn teorainneach Baile Mháirtín, atá i gceist leis an ainm - English
back(-hill?) of (the) black ring-fort
Evidence from the 16th century shows that the first element is the Irish word cúl and not cúil, 'corner, nook'. It is likely that the name refers to Lios na dTréan Dubh, a large enclosure in the adjacent townland Baile Mháirtín / Ballymartin
