Explanatory note

the field of the birds
Seans maith gur …na n-éanán “of the little birds” a bhí ann ó cheart: féach ‘Gartinnenan’ (1629). Is in iarthar Chontae an Chabháin atá gach sampla de gort “field” in ainmneacha na mbailte fearainn, agus an guta íslithe go -a- faoi mar atá anseo (‘Ga//r na néún’ pl:AL). (Tá sampla éiginnte amháin ar eolas againn i bpáircainmneacha dheisceart an chontae.) Toisc gur thit an focal as úsáid choitianta sa cheantar seo, is dócha, a rinneadh an t-athmhíniú seafóideach ar an gcéad eilimint den logainm: ‘gcathair na n-éún, fort of the birds’ Local Irish:AL (1836).
