Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the hill of the mare
capall — láir (capall baineann) i ndeisceart UladhCapall baineann a bhí i gceist le capall sa taobh seo tíre; sin é a thug an fhoirm Bhéarla ‘Mare-hill’ pron.:AL. An bunainm an-shoiléir ó ‘Knockachapuill’ Comm. Surv. (1652). Cuireann an litriú oifigiúil Béarla Marahill an logainm Gaeilge *Marbhchoill “dead-wood” in iúl, toisc gurb in a mheas Ó Donnabháin a bhí ann i dtosach báire. Bhí sé greanta ar an léarscáil faoin am a chonaic sé an fhianaise ó 1652.
