Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the round hill of the mare(s)
Bhí an dara heilimint — láir, gin. u./iol. lárach (eDIL s.v. láir) — athmhínithe mar a bheadh lár “(threshing-)floor” (cf. FGB s.v. lár (1)) ag Gaeilgeoirí na háite i 1836, de réir dealraimh. Ar ndóigh, ní láir ach capall a thugtaí sa ghnáthchaint ar chapall baineann i ndeisceart Uladh faoin am sin (gearrán nó beithíoch a thugtaí ar chapall fireann). Díol spéise mar sin na scéalta béaloidis a bailíodh i dtosach an 20ú haois a luann capaill sí leis an áit seo, m.sh. ‘the enchanted mares brought their foals from the lake to feed in safety here’ (Anglo-Celt (1922)).
