Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    ‘the town(land) of Máistiún’

Gaelaíodh an sloinne Angla-Normannach Mace (nó Macy, Massey?) mar Más san Iarmhí agus fianaíodh é mar ‘Baile Mhais’ (pl: AL) agus ‘Baile Mháis’ (OD: AL) in 1836 i gcás Macetown ansin. Bunaithe ar an fhianaise a bailíodh don logainm sin caighdeánaíodh é mar Baile Mháis/Macetown (#51614). Tá an dara Macetown sa Mhí féin .i. Macetown (#38025) agus fianaíodh é sin mar Baile mháis (pl: AL) in 1836, le guta fada sa dara mír.
Tá an chuma ann go bhfuil an sloinne céanna taobh thiar den triú Macetown freisin .i. an ceann atá faoi chaibidil anois, ach ba é MáistiúnMaistiún an leagan Gaeilge áitiúil de a d’fhorbair as de réir dealraimh, amhail Galastún (< ‘Gallyston’ > Gaulstown; #37961) agus roinnt logainmneacha eile i Cúige Laighean. Rinneadh athainilís ar an Máistiún / Maistiún seo go háitiúil, áfach, agus cuireadh baile leis .i. b’é ‘Baile Mhaistún’ an leagan a bailíodh sa cheantar in aimsir na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis. Is deacair a bheith cinnte faoi fhad an ghuta sa mhír dheireanach, ach glactar leis go raibh sé fada mar atá le fáil i gcás Macetown .i. ‘Baile mháis’ (pl: AL) (par. Scrín).

Cé nach bhfuil an sloinne Sasanach Mace fianaithe go soiléir i measc na nAngla-Normannach in Éireann is dócha gurb é sin an sloinne atá taobh thiar de na logainmneacha seo. Tabhair faoi deara áfach go bhfuil an sloinne Massey/Macy fianaithe ina measc, m.sh.

  • English

    ‘the town(land) of Máistiún’

The Anglo-Norman surname Mace (or Macy, Massey?) was Gaelicised as Más in Westmeath and is attested as ‘Baile Mhais’ (pl: AL) and ‘Baile Mháis’ (OD: AL) in 1836 in the case of Macetown. Based on the evidence collected for that placename it was standardised as Baile Mháis/Macetown (#51614). The second Macetown is in Meath .i. Macetown (#38025) and is attested as Baile mháis (pl: AL) in 1836, with a long vowel in the second element.
It appears that the third Macetown also containes this surname, but Máistiún or Maistiún was the Irish form of it that developed, similarly to Galastún (< ‘Gallyston’ > Gaulstown; #37961) and some other placenames in Leinster. Máistiún / Maistiún has been re-analysed locally, however, and baile was added to it .i. ‘Baile Mhaistún’ was the form collected in the area at the time of the Ordnance Survery. It is difficult to be certain of the length of the vowel in the final element, but it is assumed to be long, as is the case in Macetown .i. ‘Baile mháis’ (pl: AL) (par. Scrín).

Although the English surname Mace is not particularly well attested amongst the Anglo-Normans of Ireland it is likely to be the surname contained in these placenames. Note however that the surname Massey/Macy is amongst them, see:

Authorised: By petition endorsed by the justiciar and council, and sealed with the privy seal *(1336: Patent Roll, 20 Edw. III).)
