Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
‘the town(land) an Halúnach’
An Halúnach – leagan Gaeilge den tsloinne Angla-Normannach Hallen. Ba é ‘Baile an Hanluanaig’ an fhoirm a bailíodh sa cheantar in aimsir na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis. Is dócha gur leagan malartach é de an Halúnach, forbairt a tharla faoi anáil an tsloinne Ghaelaigh Ó hAnluain is dócha.
Tá an sloinne AN Hallen fianaithe i nDroichead Átha: ‘William Hallen, vicar of St. Peter’s of Drogheda’ (1551-2) - English
‘the town(land) an Halúnach’
An Halúnach – Irish form of the Anglo-Norman surname Hallen. ‘Baile an Hanluanaig’ was the form collected in the area at the time of the Ordnance Survey. It is probably an alternative form of an Halúnach, a development that probably occurred under the influence of the Gaelic surname Ó anluain.
The surname AN Hallen is attested in Drogheda: ‘William Hallen, vicar of St. Peter’s of Drogheda’ (1551-2)
