Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
'the dangerous/perilous townland'
Is féidir le bradach a mhíniú mar "thieving", "false" nó "ill-gotten" (Dineen, FGB), ach deir Mac Gabhann (2014, v. lch540) gur féidir leis a mhíniú mar "dangerous," féach Moneenbradagh (Maigh Eo). Réiteodh sé seo leis an chur síos 'Red Shaking Bog' ar Portaghbradagh (Down Survey, bar. Tír Fhiachrach), a thugann 'talamh contúirteach' le fios. I gcás Balbradagh, is dócha go dtagraíonn an t-ainm do chuid den talamh ar a gcuirtear síos air mar "alluvium" (glár) féach gsi.ie. Cf. An Bhuaile Bhradach/Bolabradda (Loch Garman), a phléitear in Ainmneacha Na mBailte Fearainn, Co. Loch Garman leis an Dochtúir Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich agus an Dochtúir Aindí Mac Giolla Chomhghaill. - English
'the dangerous/perilous townland'
While bradach can mean "thieving", "false" or "ill-gotten" (Dineen, FGB), Mac Gabhann (2014, v. p540) suggests it can also mean "dangerous," as in Moneenbradagh (Mayo). This fits with the 'Red Shaking Bog' description of Portaghbradagh (Down Survey, bar. Tireragh), indicating a treacherous terrain. In the case of Balbradagh, the name may refer to a portion of the land which according to Data from the Geographical Survey Ireland Map indicates that much of the Quaternary Sediment Type in the townland is Alluvium. Cf. An Bhuaile Bhradach/Bolabradda (Wexford) which is discussed in further detail in Townland Names of County Wexford by Dr. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich and Dr. Aindí Mac Giolla Chomhghaill.
