the ford of the expanse of water?
Tá fianaise cuibheasach déanach ann a thaispeánann gur tháinig claochlú ar fhocal tosaigh an logainm seo: ‘Athlumney’ (bl. 1306c), Ard luimneach Ainmleabhar, scríofa le peann luaidhe (1836); ‘Ath Luimnigh, “Limerick ford” is the true name, but the people call it Ard luimnigh’ Ó Donnabháin, Ainmleabhar. Tá Áth Luimnigh cóngarach do Ard Maolchon agus is faoi thionchar an logainm dheireanagh a cuireadh Ard in ionad Áth.
Tá áiteanna eile ann ar a dtugtar Luimneach. Is é an ceann is cáiliúla díobh ná cathair agus contae Luimnigh. Ainm ar inbhear na Sionainne ab ea Luimneach ó bhunús, mar a leathann an abhainn. Díol suime go bhfuil Áth Luimnigh suite i gcomar na hAbhann Duibhe (Séile anallód) agus na Bóinne, mar a bhfairsingíonn abhainn na Bóinne. B’fhéidir, mar sin, gurb é an focal luimnech a chiallaigh ‘cloaked, mantled’ atá laistiar den dá Luimneach sin, agus gur tagairt atá ann do léinseach uisce. Féach luman, ‘cloak, (protecting) mantle’; luimnech ‘cloaked, mantled’ (Dictionary of the Irish Language) - English
