Uí Chiara – sept name.
A family of the Southern Uí Néill who were lords of Cairbre (the modern-day barony of Carbury) in north-west Kildare up until the arrival of the Anglo-Normans. (see: Sloinnte Gaedhal is Gall, Woulfe, P.W. (1923), Ó Ciardha).

Ó Ciara – surname.
But the this placename could also contain the surname Ó Ciara. They were numerous in Kildare and Meath. (SGG, s.n. Ó Ciardha).
