Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Ní cinnte brí an ainm. B'fhéidir gur Crunnaire (< Crunndoire) an fhoirm cheart agus gur comhfhocal idir cru(i)nn, 'round' +* * doire, '(oak-)wood' atá ann; tá an fhorbairt -nd- > -nn- seanbhunaithe sa Ghaeilge agus tá sé le feiscint sa logainm Ráth Bhrannaibh < Ráth Bhranduibh i gcontae Mhaigh Eo. Cf., leis, na hainmneacha Crunnchoill (Corcaigh) agus Crunnmhóin (Tiobraid Árann), agus an logainm Liataire (< liath + doire), atá le fáil ar fud na tíre
- English
Meaning uncertain. The correct form might be Crunnaire (< Crunndoire), a compound of cru(i)nn, 'round' +* * doire, '(oak-)wood'; the development -nd- > -nn- is long established in Irish and it can also be seen in the placename Ráth Bhrannaibh < Ráth Bhranduibh in county Mayo. Cf. Crunnchoill (Cork) and Crunnmhóin (Tipperary), and the placename Liataire (< liath + doire), found throughout the country
