Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the (oak-)wood of —
Ní léir brí chruinnill; cf. an logainm Cruinneall/Crindle, Co. Dhoire. Is i dtús an 18ú haois a fhaightear an chéad tagairt don ainm Béarla Ashgrove; d'fhéadfadh sé gur leathaistriúchán ar an mbunainm Gaeilge atá ann, agus cf. 'Richard Ashe' luaite sa cheantar seo (bf Lios na Maighean) i dTeistíocht ó 1641 - English
the (oak-)wood of —
The meaning of chruinnill is unclear; cf. the placename Cruinneall/Crindle, Co. Derry. The first reference to the English name Ashgrove is found at the beginning of the 18th century; this could be a half-translation of the original Irish name. Cf. 'Richard Ashe', mentioned in this area (the townland of Lios na Maighean/Sycamore Fields or Lisnamaine) in a Deposition from 1641
