Glossary

English townland, town, homestead

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of An Faoiteach
An Faoiteach — ón sloinne de Faoite (< le White na nAngla-Normannach).
Ní dócha gur logainm ar leith atá léirithe in iontráil 1664 'Ballingly', srl.; is cosúil gur mhíchóipeáil ar litriú ar nós 1654 ‘Ballynyty’ iad (.i. -nyty > -ngly, -ngig).

  • English

    the town of An Faoiteach
An Faoiteach — from the surname de Faoite (< Anglo-Norman le White).
It is not likely that the forms in entry 1664 'Ballingly', etc., represent a separate placename; they are probably miscopyings of a spelling such as 1654 ‘Ballynyty’ (i.e., -nyty > -ngly, -ngig).
