Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the trench, ravine of Ciarán
    Ciarán — ainm pearsanta.
Ciallaíonn an focal Béarla decoy lochán a bhfuil líontáin feistithe air chun breith ar éanlaithe fiáine. Áit ar leith ab ea Clais Chiaráin de réir iontráil 1786.
Tá paiste mór drochthalún in oirthear an bhaile fearainn seo mar a raibh loch tráth, is dócha. ** ***Loch (nó Loch Tí) Caorach, 'lake of [the house of] (the) sheep (pl.)', b'fhéidir, an sean-logainm atá le feiscint in iontrálacha 1534–1654.
Cf. Logainmneacha na hÉireann III, 167.

  • English

There is a large patch of poor ground in the east of the townland where there was once a lake. The old placename seen in entries 1534–1654 appears to be ** ***Loch (nó Loch Tí) Caorach, 'lake of [the house of] (the) sheep (pl.)'.
Cf. Logainmneacha na hÉireann III, 167.
