the island of Conall
Conall — ainm pearsanta (atuigthe)
Conall Gruadhearg “Conall the red-cheeked” a thug ainm don oileán seo de réir bhéaloideas na háite sa 19ú haois, ach is cosúil ar na tagairtí luatha (‘-gonine’ 1610, ‘-connen’ 1652) nach in é a bhí ann ó cheart. Cf. an sloinne Mac Conaing (‘Giolla Pádraig mac Conaing, oifistéal Chille Móire’ (s.a. 1520), ‘oifistél Chille Móire .i. Conchubhar mac Conaing’ (s.a. 1550) Annála as Bréifne), dá ndearnadh Brl. O'Connell níos déanaí. - English
the island of Conall
Conall — (reinterpreted?) personal name
According to local tradition in the 19th century, the eponym of this island was Conall Gruadhearg “Conall the red-cheeked”. It would appear from earlier references (‘-gonine’ 1610, ‘-connen’ 1652) that this was not the original form of the qualifying element. Note the surname Mac Conaing (‘Giolla Pádraig mac Conaing, oifistéal Chille Móire’ (s.a. 1520), ‘oifistél Chille Móire .i. Conchubhar mac Conaing’ (s.a. 1550) Annála as Bréifne), later anglicized as O'Connell.
