Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the field of the skerry, rock

Ní léir cad atá i gceist le sceir anseo; scairbh nó oileán íseal creagach sa bhfarraige is brí leis an bhfocal de ghnáth. Tá loch i ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn seo. Léirítear F[oot]P[ath] SO i ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn a théann trasna srutháinín. Más seanchosán é seo d'fhéadfaí an bhrí "shallow ford" a chur san áireamh.

  • English

the field of the skerry, rock

It is unclear what is meant by sceir here; the word usually refers to a submerged reef or low rocky island in the sea. There is a lake in the south part of this townland. The Ordnance Survey maps show a F[oot]P[ath] in the south of the townland which crosses a small stream. If this is an old path we might consider the meaning "shallow ford".
