There are only two examples of the word cartún/cartrún “quarter(land)” in the townland names of Co. Cavan, both found bordering other counties (Li, Lo). The standard Irish form cartún is used here (cf. the local Irish form ‘cartún’ in the barony of Templeport), although it is possible that cartrún was used locally. Unfortunately no local Irish form was recorded in the Ordnance Survey Namebook (1836).
