Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the church of Muire
Muire — ainm pearsanta (< Maria na Laidine). Cill Mhuire na nGall an seanainm ar an áit seo a bhí tite as úsáid faoin 17ú haois de réir gach dealraimh; athbheodh go saorga é, áfach, sa 20ú haois i bhfoilseacháin ar nós Logainmneacha le R. Ó Foghludha (1935) agus Conntae an Chláir le S. Ó hÓgáin (1938)

  • English

    the church of Muire
Muire — personal name (< Latin Maria). Cill Mhuire na nGall was an older version of the name which was probably obsolete by the 17th century; it was artificially revived in the 20th century, however, in publications such as Logainmneacha by R. Ó Foghludha (1935) and Conntae an Chláir by S. Ó hÓgáin (1938)
