Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    Muiriúch Tuaithe ‘the laity’s Muiriúch’

  • English

    Muiriúch Tuaithe ‘the laity’s Muiriúch’

Muiriúch — placename meaning ‘level land along sea-coast’

Muiriúch (muireabhach) is a dialectal form of muirbheach, murbhach. Another form is found in Murbhach (Murvagh Beach) in Co. Donegal, Point 34 on the WAW. Muiriúch Tuaithe ‘the laity’s Muiriúch’ is in contrast to the adjacent townland of Muiriúch Cille, ‘the church’s Muiriúch’, which belonged to the see of Kilfenora.
