Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
(oak-)wood of (the) roving band of warrior-hunters
Is deacair a bheith cinnte faoi bhunleagan Gaeilge an logainm seo de bharr na fianaise béarlaithe a bheith ábhairín débhríoch. Bunaithe ar fhuaimniú an lae inniu, ina bhfuil an bhéim ar an dara siolla, a mholaimid **Doire Fhéinne** anseo. Ginideach uatha den fhocal **fiann** atá sa cháilitheoir (leagan iolra den fhocal céanna a thugann ainm na laochra **na Fianna** dúinn). Ní réitíonn an fhoirm áitiúil a breacadh san Ainmleabhar .i. ‘*An Doireán Aoidhche*’ leis an bhfianaise stairiúil.
Tá an focal **fiann** “roving band of warrior-hunters” le fáil i logainmneacha eile ar fud na tíre, m.sh. *bf* **Coill Fhéinne** “wood of (the) roving band…” (#30752) i gContae Luimnigh; *bf* **Corr na Féinne** “the round hill of the roving band…” (#4795) i gContae an Chabháin; *abh* **Abha na Féinne** “the river of the roving band…” (#1394773) i gContae Chiarraí; foirmíocht charraige darb ainm **Bord na bhFiann** “the table of Na Fianna” (#1414738) i gCiarraí (*Fin Mac Cool’s Table* SO agus *The King's Table* atá air seo i mBéarla); tuama meigiliteach darb ainm **Leaba na bhFiann** “the bed of Na Fianna” (#1394445) i gCiarraí freisin.
- English
(oak-)wood of (the) roving band of warrior-hunters
It is difficult to be certain about the Irish form of this placename as the surviving anglicized evidence is somewhat ambiguous. Based on the modern pronunciation of the name in which the stress falls on the second syllable, the version recommended here is **Doire Fhéinne**. The second element in this recommended form is the gen. sg. of the word **fiann** (the plural form of which, **na Fianna**, gives us the name of the famous troops associated with Fionn mac Cumhaill). The Irish form recommended by members of the Ordnance Survey topographical staff in 1839, ‘*An Doireán Aoidhche*’, cannot be reconciled with the rest of the historical evidence.
**Fiann** “roving band of warrior-hunters” occurs in other placenames around the country, e.g. *bf* **Coill Fhéinne** “wood of (the) roving band…” (#30752) in County Limerick, angl. *Killeany*; *bf* **Corr na Féinne** “the round hill of the roving band…” (#4795) in County Cavan, angl. *Cornafean*; *abh* **Abha na Féinne** “the river of the roving band…” (#1394773) in County Kerry, angl. *Owennafeana River*; a rock formation known as **Bord na bhFiann** “the table of Na Fianna” (#1414738) in Kerry, angl. *Fin Mac Cool’s Table* or *The King's Table*; a megalithic tomb called **Leaba na bhFiann** “the bed of Na Fianna” (#1394445), also in Kerry; etc.
