the church of Colmán Bán
Colmán Bán (“white Colmán”) — ainm naoimhFéach ‘Colmán Bán’ in Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniae 707.101 (faoi ‘Comainmnigud noem hErenn’).
Díol spéise nach bhfuil an aidiacht bán “white” le fáil sna tagairtí is luaithe dá dtagann anuas chugainn. Ba é an tuiscint áitiúil sa 19ú haois gur chodarsnacht idir Colmán Bán “white Colmán” agus Colmán Breac “speckled Colmán” ba bhunús le hainmneacha an dá pharóiste teorantacha seo Kilcolmanbane agus Kilcolmanbrack (LSO I 255), ach is cosúil go dtagann an tuiscint sin salach ar an bhfianaise stairiúil: féach an nóta faoi par Cill Cholmáin Bhric (#1439).
Maidir leis an meititéis atá le sonrú san fhuaimniú áitiúil 1838 ‘Cill Clumhain Bán recte Cill Cholmáin Bháin’ (LSO I 186), cf. nóta an Donnabhánaigh faoin ainm bf Cill Cholmáin (#53527) i Loch Garman: 1840 ‘Cill Cholmáin which is everywhere pron[ounce]d Kilclomaun’ (cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Kilclammon, agus 1840 ‘Cill Chlumáin’ pl:AL in Ó Cearbhaill, Logainmneacha na hÉireann II s.n. Cill Cholmáin (TÁ) (#46699)). Maidir le séimhiú an -m- láir cf. bf Baile Uí Chlúmháin/Colmanstown (#19761) agus 1838 ‘Poll Cholomhain (pronounced Clumháin) i.e. the well of St. Colman’ LSO (Ga) II 529 i gCluain Rois, Contae an Chláir). D’fhéadfadh sé go bhfuil iarracht den mheititéis seo le sonrú cheana féin in 1512 ‘Kyleclinabayn’ (CPL XIX §685) agus 1513 ‘Kilcolmonan’ (CPL XX §141 *n.*5, mar a ndeir an fear eagair ‘the first ‘o’ changed from a (?)‘b’; the second doubtful: perhaps an ‘a’’ — d’fhéadfaimis a bheith measartha cinnte nach * Kilcb- a bhí ann ar dtúis ach * Kilclo-, agus is féidir linn ‘Kilclomavan’ a léamh dá réir (cf. 1512)). Cf. an guta cúnta soiléir in 1552 ‘Killecollamanbane’. Tá an leagan giorraithe den ainm Kyle (< cill le défhoghar) le tabhairt faoi deara chomh maith (1805 ‘Kile’).
Mionainmneacha:
- Bóthar na Muc “the road of the pigs” ab ainm don seanchosán ón teampall anuas, ar feadh teorainn thiar theas an bhaile fearainn tamaillín, go dtí Cherryhill House in bf Baile Uí Aoláin (#27892) ó dheas (www.osi.ie; Mac Cába, Historical Notes on Laois 74). Rinneadh an chéad ionsaí ar na Sasanaigh lá Chath Bhearna na gCleití (#27896) ag an gcrosaire i dteorainn le bf Baile an Chnocáin (#28495) más fíor don traidisiún áitiúl (ibid.). Sa chur síos ar thailte Phiogóideach an Dísirt in 1608 tá sé le déanamh amach go raibh a ghabháltas siúd in bf Diméin Lamberton (#28492) taobh le ‘the plain fields of Clanchill’ sa bhaile fearainn seo idir chamáin, ainm a bhfuil céad eilimint an logainm seo [.i. Cill Cholmháin Bháin] mar cháilitheoir ann b’fhéidir (CPR 113).
I nótaí Liam Price atá i seilbh an Bhrainse Logainmneacha tá mionainmneacha eile anseo nach léir a suíomh, mar atá:
2. Knock Bawn < An Cnoc Bán “the white hill” (gaolmhar le 1563c ‘Carigııı ban’ v.l. ‘van’ ar an sean-léarscáil?);
3. Knock na Gall < Cnoc na nGall “the hill of the English (?)” — cf. aistriúchán ó lár an 16ú haois 1549 ‘Klenegall alias thenglish diche’ < Claí na nGall “the ditch of the English” taobh theas de Thigh Mochua in bf An Choill (#28114)); agus
4. Tobar na Doar < Tobar na nDeor “the well of the tears” (?).
