Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

The ford mouth of the herrings?

Ní léir céard go díreach atá i gceist le scadán san ainm seo. Is iasc mara é an scadán (“herring”, “clupea harengus”, téarma.ie) agus tá an áit seo suite tamall maith ón gcósta. Mar sin, b’fhéidir gur tagairt d’iasc éigin eile atá ann (amhail an sead), d’áit a ndíoltaí scadáin ann, nó do scadán sa bhrí “thin man” (FGB). JÓG. 23 Meitheamh 2025

  • English

The ford mouth of the herrings?

The meaning of scadán is not entirely clear here. Scadán (“herring”, “clupea harengus”, téarma.ie) is a marine fish, and this townland is situated some distance from the coast. It may, therefore, be a reference to some other fish (such as the shad), to a place where herring were sold, or to scadán in the sense of “thin man” (FGB). JÓG. 23 June 2025
