Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the field of the stake?
Is cosúil gur cleithe (gin. < cleith “stake, etc.”) atá sa dara heilimint anseo. Bhí claonadh sa cheantar seo -eithe- a dhruidim le /eː/ .i. fadú a dhéanamh ar ghuta gearr a thagann roimh -th- caol /h/. Mhíneodh an fhorbairt seo an meascán idir samplaí a chríochnaíonn in -clehie, -clehy agus samplaí a chríochnaíonn in -clea, -clay. Tá an fhorbairt chéanna le sonrú in bf Cnoc na Ceithirne > 2005 /nɑknəˈkeːrin/ (#28317) agus bf Cluain Reithir > 2005 /klonˈreːr/ (#28323)).
Ní féidir cléithe (gin. < cliath “wattle, hurdle”) a chur as an áireamh ar fad. Ní raibh an claonadh céanna ann an -th- caol /h/ a chailliúint i ndiaidh ghuta a bhí fada cheana (e.g. bf Gort na Cléithe > Gortnacleha (TÁ 26) (#46314), ach tá corrshampla sa cheantar seo, m.sh. bf Garraí na Réithe > Garrynarea (#26491) (CC 38, 39) agus bf Barr na Féithe > Baurnafea (#27077) (CC 15). Ach is san fhianaise dhéanach (sa 19ú haois) a thagann na foirmeacha -fey, -rea chun solais sa dá chás úd, murab ionann is 1561 ‘Gortnycle’ taobh le 1586 ‘Gortneclehe’ san ainm seo.
