An Bhearna — the gap
Béalada — crossways; passes?Bearna Bhaile Mhic Craith “the gap of Baile Mhic Craith (the town of Mac Craith (sloinne))” an fhoirm fhada den chéad ainm atá le feiscint in 1636 ‘Barnaballycragh’, 1659 ‘Barnbally Craggh’, etc. (cf. 1601 ‘Shane … Dyrmot Mc Craghy’ sa cheantar seo sna Fiants agus an sloinne Cragh sa pharóiste seo in Griffith’s Valuation).
Foirm iolra den fhocal béalad “place where several roads meet … pass” atá sa dara hainm, is cosúil. D’fhéadfadh sé go ndéanann an dá logainm seo tagairt don ghné céanna ó cheart; féach DIL (www.dil.ie) s.v. bélat.
