Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of An Gróntach
An Gróntach — sloinne (< le Graunt na nAngla-Normannach)Tagann leagan Gaeilge anuas chugainn ón mbliain 1590 .i. ‘Baile in Gronta’ (féach Nic Dhonnchadha ‘The Medical School of Aghmacart’ in Ossory, Laois and Leinster 2 (2006) le haghaidh tuilleadh eolais faoin bhfoinse seo). Is maith a théann sé seo leis an ainm a breacadh síos ó Ghaeilgeoirí na háite seo in 1838 ‘Baile Ghrónta’ (féach nóta faoi par Achadh Bhó (#1412)). Féach leis go dtaispeánann an fhoirm stairiúil úd go bhfuaimnítí -aigh mar /ə/ i gcanúint thuaisceart Osraí chomh luath le deireadh an 16ú haois.
Tá cur síos san Fhardal Seandálaíochta ar chrannóg a fuarthas sa loch anseo sa bhliain 1860 (www.archaeology.ie).
Is é an Donnabhánach a scríobh 1838 ‘Baile an Ghrúntaigh’: is í an fhoirm seo in -ú- an fuaimniú áitiúil de bf Baile an Ghróntaigh (#50302) (PL 10, 18) ní fada óna bhaile dúchais (1841 ‘baile ghrúnta’). Ardú (/oː/ > /uː/) in aice chonsain srónaigh is cúis leis seo.
