Explanatory note

the flooding river?
the flooded land?Pointe trasnaithe taobh thiar de bhaile Thigh Maodhóg. De réir Laurence (Maoileachlainn) Uí Bhroin ba é Áth Bháiteoige “the ford of (An) B(h)áiteog” marc teorann thuaidh Fhearann Ó gCeallaigh (féach AL anseo, cf. LSO Uíbh Fhailí I 60). Is cosúil gur thug an abhainn ainm don áth, a thug ainm ansin don bhaile fearainn beag ar an taobh thuaidh de (cf. foirm an Bhranaigh le 1733 ‘Bateogebridge’), ach níl a mhalairt d’fhorbairt le cur as an áireamh áfach.
Féach an focal céanna, le malairt túschonsain m-, mar ainm abhann in abh An Mháiteog (#106078) (Lú/Mí). Maidir le ‘talamh bháite’ de, féach bf Mullach na Báiteoige (#40912) i Muineachán agus go háirithe an plé ag Fiachra Mac Gabhann ar ainm bf Máiteog (#34388) i Maigh Eo (“place subject to inundation with water” Logainmneacha Mhaigh Eo bar. Thír Amhlaidh).
Is é an bóthar siar ó thuaidh ón áth seo an bealach a thug ainm do bf Coill an Bhealaigh (#28250) de réir dealraimh.
