Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

the corner, nook of Ó Móráin
    the corners, nooks
    the(oak-)wood of the mill
    Ó Móráin — sloinne

Díol spéise an fhoirm Ghaeilge 1595 ‘na gCulach’ [gin. iol.] i Láimhscríbhinn Uí Dhuinn, a thugann an t-ainmneach Na Cúlacha le fios (= 1607 ‘Naculacha’). Breacadh síos an fhoirm iolra chéanna ‘Na Cúlacha’ ó mhuintir na háite sa bhaile fearainn darb ainm béarlaithe bf Cools (#11274) i Múscraí, Contae Chorcaí, i 1954 (cartlann an Bhrainse Logainmneacha).

Léirítear -l caol an fhocail cúil “corner, nook” (seachas cúl “(hill-)back”) i bhfoirmeacha béarlaithe ar nós 1607 ‘Cowillmoran’, 1607 ‘Couilmoran’. (Cf. Na Cúilte “the (hill-)backs” ag Ó Crualaoich in Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.n. Cools.)

Is cosúil nach maireann de na trí logainm seo sa cheantar ach Coolagh.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Clann Chearúill “the descendants of Cearúll (< Cearbhall)” (cf. bf Cill Chaomháin (#28471)) an t-ainm ar an gceathrúin ina raibh an áit seo suite.
