Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the wood of the fort?

‘Talamh ard (coillteach), coill, ceann tíre’ an réimse bríonna atá leis an bhfocal ros. Dhealródh sé gur minicí an bhrí ‘talamh ard (coillteach)’ leis sa taobh seo tíre; talamh íseal atá sa chuid is mó den bhaile fearainn seo, áfach. Cf. bf An Ros (#27887).

Ní léir cad dó a sheasann dún anseo. Níl aon iarsmaí seandálaíochta sa bhaile fearainn seo ná níl aon tuairisc ar struchtúr dá leithéid a bheith anseo. Ní thagann aon fhianaise anuas chugainn atá níos sine ná deireadh an 18ú haois, áfach, agus d’fhéadfadh sé gur tháinig truailliú ar an mbuneilimint deiridh. Más réadú é 1778 ‘-down’ ar dhéfhoghar Gaeilge (/~əu/), d’fhéadfaí na dtamhan “of the tree-stumps” a chur san áireamh (cf. bf Cúil na dTamhan (#32488) (Lm), bf Coill na dTamhan (#52499) (LG)).

Tuairimíonn Ó Murchadha (in Laois: History and Society) go bhféadfadh sé gurb ionann é seo agus an logainm stairiúil ‘Ross Náir’ atá le fáil sa Metrical Dindshenchas, agus go mb’fhéidir gurb é seo an áit a bhí i gceist le ‘Lachtnán mac Cearnaigh, rí Dúin Nar Laoighsi’ sna Fragmentary Annals faoin mbliain 913.
