    the short acre

Tabhair faoi deara 1549 ‘le Accregear otherwise called the short acre in Irre’. Cf. an mionainm Coill an Acra Ghirr faoi bf Cill Chaomháin (#28471) i dTigh na hInse, 13km ó thuaidh. Cf. freisin na leaganacha Béarla 1542 ‘le Short Acre’, 1549 ‘Acregare’, ‘Short Acre’ COD faoi bf An tAcra Gearr (#27486) i dtuaisceart Chill Chainnigh.

    Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
    1. I ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn atá 1549 ‘Taghare?’ Carrigan MS, 1621 ‘Clonbeger’ CPR, 1637 ‘Clonvegare’, 1838 ‘Clontegar’ Desc. Rem., 1841 Clontygar SO. Ba dhóigh leat go bhfuil baint aige seo le hainm an bhaile fearainn, cé go mbeadh Na Cluainte Gearra (?) “the short pastures” neamhghnách mar logainm. Díol suntais an pháirc mhór rabhnáilte c. 5½ acra taobh thiar den teach sa chuid seo den bhaile fearainn ar léarscáil 6ʺ. Ní luaitear iarsmaí seandálaíochta ar bith san Fhardal, ach d’fhéadfaí Cluain Tí + ainm pearsanta “the pasture of the house of —” a chur san áireamh freisin, b’fhéidir.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Ar Cotton Map léirítear teampall darb ainm 1563c ‘Kilnungay’ [‘kilnūgay’ — leg. ‘kilmungayn’ is cosúil] díreach laisteas de ‘Acargar’. Foirmeacha stairiúla eile is ea 1549 ‘Killamongan’ Carrigan MS, 1563 ‘Kilmolgan’ F, 1619 ‘Killmolgan al’ Killmongan’ Inq., 1621 ‘Killmolgan alias Killmongan’ CPR, 1637 ‘Killmolgan al’ Killmongan’ Inq., 1638c ‘Kilmeanain’ Dinnseanchas II 31 < Cill Mongáin (?) “the church of Mongán (ainm pearsanta)”. Ach féach an cuntas seo a leanas ar bhan-naomh de chuid Ó bhFailghe agus a clann mhac (1400c):

Damrad ingen Aillela Find m. Aeda Róin ríg .h. Falge, máthair Mac nDamraid i mMíliuc Fhíaich, de quibus dicitur:
    Cuan, Conbran, Colman, Cass,
    Tnuan, Angan amnas,
    Mobecocc din tir si thair,
    secht meic dilsi do Damraid

    CSGH 722.83 (Leabhar Laighean 374)

Féach leis Ó Riain ‘Angán of Míleac Fiaich. Patron of an unidentified church, possibly in Laois … Angán’s church must have been a place of some substance…’ Dictionary of Irish Saints 63. An é atá againn anseo mar sin Mangán < Mo + Angán?

Más as an Angán seo a ainmníodh an teampall ar an Acra Gearr, d’fhéadfadh sé go bhfuil cuid den logainm stairiúil úd Míleac Fiaich “the low-lying riverside land of Fiach (?)” caomhnaithe in ainm an bhaile b Móinteach Mílic, díreach taobh thuaidh de (‘Cuán may be the same as Mochua of Míleac, who is mentioned in a note to the Leabhar Breac version of the Martyrology of Aonghas’ Ó Riain, loc. cit.). Féach leis 1638c ‘teampall mic an damhra’ atá pléite faoi bf Coill an Iúir (#28477).

Ainm déanach ar an teampall céanna is ea 1838 ‘Ivy Church (Chapel locally)’ LSO II 193, Ivy Church SO, 1905 ‘Ivy Chapel’ JKAS IV 190 (féach www.archaeology.ie) — b’fhéidir go ndearnadh an logainm a atuiscint mar a bheadh Cill Mhongáin “church of (the) overgrown place”, ach gach seans gur ainm simplí Béarla é.
