Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the corner, nook of the tanner, cobbler
Tagann an focal céanna i gceist in ainm an chnoic Carrigatuder SO 6ʺ < Carraig an tSúdaire “the rock of the tanner, cobbler” in bf Baile an tSléibhe (#28119) i mBaile Adaim — féach ansiúd ainm an fhoirgnimh bhaoise Cobbler’s Castle SO a tógadh sa 18ú haois. Tá sé le fáil i gcontaetha eile leis, m.sh. bf Cnoicín an tSúdaire (#10447), bf Cúil an tSúdaire (#9456) i gCorcaigh, bf Lios an tSúdaire (#66180) i gContae an Dúin, srl. Tagann súdaire ó sūtor na Laidine.
Is é 1666 ‘[Cultudery, alias] Port-Arlington’ ASE 84 an chéad tagairt dá bhfuil againn d’ainm Béarla an bhaile. Tá roinnt leathaistriúcháin agus ainmneacha Béarla nuachumtha sa cháipéis chéanna (a chuireann síos ar mhainéar an Tiarna Arlington) — cuid acu níos buaine ná a chéile.
