Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
(the) ring-fort of —
Is dócha gurb ionann an baile fearainn seo ar imeall thiar thailte na Sean-Ghall agus 1282–83 ‘Rathtaffyn’ v.l. ‘Rathteffyn’, talamh scriosta i mainéar Dhún Másc narbh fhiú faic é de thoradh ionsaithe na nGael (CDI II 468, Inq. PM 2 II 268). Bhí an áit sin i seilbh ‘Richard Coffyn’.
Faighimid tagairt do dhuine den ainm céanna i gCill Dara sa bhliain 1298 mar ar cuireadh gadaíocht i leith ‘Gregory … Richard … Thomas Coffyn’ (CJR I 196); thóg ‘Richard Coffyn’ cás dlí i gcoinne ‘Henry Duneght’ (ó ‘Bernegeyh’, bf Bearna na Gaoithe (#25472)) i dtuaisceart Chill Dara i 1305 (CJR II 94). Sa cheantar céanna bhí logainm eile bunaithe ar an sloinne .i. 1299 ‘Coffyniston’ (CJR I 246). Sloinne Angla-Normannach é seo, díorthaithe ó chauf, cauf “bald” de réir dealraimh (féach 1273 ‘Richard Chaufin’, 1327 ‘Caffyn’ ag Reaney, Dictionary of British Surnames 64 faoin iontráil Chaffin, Chafen, Chauvin, Caffin, Caffyn).
Ach má ta gaol idir ‘Coffyn’ agus ‘Rathteffyn’ is deacair é a shamhlú. D’fhéadfaí an t-ainmfhocal coitianta taoibhín “side-patch; splinter of stone; small addition” a chur san áireamh freisin (Dinn.) (féach freisin taoibhín “side-wedge” ibid. s.v. troighthín).
Tá an táthú -th + th- > /t/ le sonrú ina lán den fhianaise anseo, rud a thiocfadh le Ráth Thaoibhín.
Ní mhaireann aon iarsmaí imfhálaithe anseo.
