Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Ní léir brí.
Tagann leathnú suntasach ar an mBearú ag an bpointe seo agus measaimid gur dócha gur comhfhocal é seo < béal + linn “mouth-pool”. (Cf. béillic < béal + leac i mionainmneacha i gCiarraí (#1419825, #1394211), agus i logainmneacha stairiúla in FSÁG II leis an míniú “rock cavern”.) Más ea, díol spéise -nn caol deiridh na Gaeilge réadaithe mar -ng(ue) in iontrálacha 1654, 1666. Níl aon fhianaise ar a leithéid i logainmneacha bharúntacht Thigh na hInse laistiar (m.sh. bf An Rinn (#28644) i Ros Fhionnghlaise). Seans go bhfuil tionchar an logainm Shasanaigh Billing le brath orthu seo mar sin (féach Reaney, Billing, Billings, Billins; cf. 1295 ‘Henry de Belynges’ CJR I 30).
Tá an áit seo clúdaithe sa chuid thoir de 1655 ‘Grangeskry’ ar léarscáil an Down Survey. Níl aon dealramh le háiteamh Dowling in JKAS XIII 103, 106 gur don bhaile fearainn beag seo amháin a thagraíodh an t-ainm eile úd, áfach (cf. bf Fisherstown (#28654)).
Is é Belin an litriú ar SO 1ú eagrán 6ʺ agus sin é atá in Innéacs na mBailte Fearainn freisin (aguisín le Daonáireamh 1851); is é Belan atá ar na léarscáileanna SO ina dhiaidh sin.
Ní dócha gurb ionann is an áit inar briseadh ‘cath Bithland’ CGH 317a22 (féach FSÁG II Biothlann(a).).
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- Pollaun SO < An Pollán (?) “the little pool”.
