Tá tagairt Ghaeilge dó in RIA 23 P 61 .i. 1475c ‘caislén na hinnsi’ < Caislean na hInse “the castle of An Inis (the river-island)” (i gcló ag Nicholls in LS Uí Dhuinn 117n18). Cf. ainm an tsléibhe sl Sliabh Chlár na hInse “the mountain of the plain (?) of An Inis” (#1419723) os a chionn seo laisteas agus féach leis an iontráil don bharúntacht (#131).
Tá bf An Chill (#28679) mar a bheadh oileán in iarthuaisceart an bhaile fearainn seo.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
- Ainm eile ar an gceathrúin talún seo Thigh na hInse ab ea 1608/9 ‘Bolinumer … buali an umair’, ‘Bollinummer’, 1607/8 ‘Bualyanumarre’, ‘Bualianuamair’, ‘Bualyanuamare’, 1608 ‘Bualyanumer’, 1622 ‘Buollynumer’, ‘Buollynummar’, 1629 ‘Buolynviner’, 1637/8 ‘Ballynomer’ < Buaile an Umair “the cattle-fold, summer pasture of the trough”.
- Maidir le 1823 ‘Tennihinch Mill Quarter’ TAB, 1841 Mill Quarter SO, cf. 1566 ‘Myll’ sna Fiants. Ní léir bunús na fo-roinne eile 1823 ‘Tennihinch Augha’ TAB.
- Ní léir an ainm eile ar an gcaisleán seo i ndáiríre atá in 1547 ‘acc an mbádhún riaganach’ ARÉ, 1563c ‘Bavnregan’ < An Bábhún Riagánach (?) “the bawn, fortified enclosure of the Uí Riagáin”. Tá 1563c ‘Bavnregan’ scríofa ar léarscáil Cotton mar a bheadh ainm fo-dhúiche idir ‘Yregan (O Dunne)’ agus ‘Feranodovlin’ (féach par An Bhuiríos (#1424)), taobh thoir de Shliabh Bladhma. Deir Ó Donnabháin ‘Badhun-Riaganach … probably Castlebrack, situated near Cloonaslee’ — ach tá tamall fada ar an mapa céanna idir ‘Bavnregan’ agus ‘h parte’ .i. Is ann do bf Achadh an Bhábhúin (#28465) le hais an Chaisleáin Bhric ach bhí bábhún sa chaisleán eile seo Thigh na hInse (www.archaeology.ie).
