Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the black town
Is féidir a bheith measartha cinnte gur baile “town(land)” atá sa chéad eilimint anseo i bhfianaise na tagairte Gaeilge 1565c ‘Baile Dubh’ sa Leabhar Branach. Tá an logainm céanna caomhnaithe in 1601 ‘Kilballeduff’, et var., faoi bf An Chill (#28751) agus in 1655 ‘Kilballiduffe’, et var., faoi par. An Chill (#1446). Tá an baile fearainn seo taobh le bf An Chill.
Os a choinne sin, tá an tagairt bhéarlaithe 1566 ‘Boulleduff’ an-chosúil le réadú ar buaile “cattle-fold, summer pasture” (murar míléamh é ‘-ou-’ ar -a- ornáideach i bpeannaireacht na linne) agus ní féidir an focal sin a chur as an áireamh ar fad.
