Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    bawn, fortified enclosure of Eachra
Eachra (< Eachra(i)d na Sean-Ghaeilge) — logainm “(the place of) steeds”?

Maidir leis an gcéad eilimint bábhún, cf. ‘Castle (possible site): inside enclosure’ san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie) agus ‘the “Bawn” of Bawnaghra is a polygonal enclosure’ in History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 283.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Tá fothracha eaglasta anseo (‘Probably an early ecclesiastical enclosure’, Fardal Seandálaíochta), a ndeir Ó Corragáin fúthu ‘[T]he Church of Bawnaghra, in Irish Kyle-aghra, stands in the centre of the ‘Church field’’ (loc. cit.). Sampla eile de cill de réir dealraimh i dtosach an logainm is ea 1636 ‘Bawnagherry and Killogherry’.

Ní léir an ionann *Cill Eachra seo an Chorragánaigh agus an logainm stairiúil 1150c ‘cella Echairith’. Tá an logainm úd le fáil i mbeatha Molua, éarlamh pharóiste na Cille (< Cill Chluain Fearta Molua), atá tamall ó bhaile (25km slí) i dtuaisceart na barúntachta seo (féach faoi bf An Chill (#28751) agus san Fhardal Seandálaíochta, www.archaeology.ie). MaodhógAodhán (‘Aedan Echaird’, Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniae 707.11) ab ainm don naomh a bhi ina chónaí in Eachaireadh de réir na beatha réamhráite.
