Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    cross of (the) infant?

Níl bunús an cháilitheora cinnte anseo, cé gur cosúil go ndearnadh é a atuiscint mar naíon “infant” am éigin sa 17ú haois (cf. bf, par Glas Naíon (#57146) i mBaile Átha Cliath; féach www.dil.ie s.v. noídiu). Níl an -n deiridh le feiscint in iontrálacha 1549, 1659 ná 1812. Cf. bf Tobar Naí (#31106) i Luimneach agus an tagairt Ghaeilge 1561 ‘cloiche naighe’ [g.] < bf Cloch Naí (#53088) i Loch Garman (Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Clonee Lower). Cf. freisin, b’fhéidir, par Ráth Naoi (#2717) i gCill Mhantáin < Nóe, ainm pearsanta.

Tá cuid den bhaile fearainn seo i gceantar uirbeach Cheatharlach.
