Explanatory note
- English
The evidence for this anglicised place-name supports derivation from Teampall Doire as suggested in BPP (p.88), although derivation from O’Donovan’s ‘Teampall a’ doire’ [Teampall an Doire] (8) is not impossible in light of the tendency for the article to be dropped in anglicisation (see BALCARRIG, par. Ballycanew).
The generic element teampall is an early borrowing from Latin templum (see DIL tempul). In many cases the presence of this element in an ecclesiastical name coincides with Anglo-Norman settlement (see Hurley 1979 p.88), but as these sites may of course have been well developed before the Anglo-Norman arrival (ibid. p.79), it need not be assumed that place-names containing teampall must refer to post-1169 foundations. (See also Colfer 2002, pp.107‒110.)
In this instance the place-name itself is the only evidence for an ecclesiastical site on this spot, as no physical remains have been recorded here (see archaeology.ie).
Elsewhere Teampall Doire is also the precursor to Templederry in Tipperary (see logainm.ie).
[It has recently been brought to the attention of the Placenames Branch by folklorist Michael Fortune that a local tradition of a graveyard and church here exists here, with a field in the townland actually called the Church Field. This is very much at one with the presence of teampall “church” in this place-name.]
