the town(land) of Ó Dorchaí
Ó Dorchaí — sloinneTá an sloinne Ó Dorchaí fós le fáil sa cheantar seo mar Darcy sa Bhéarla, ach is minic a scríobhtar é mar D'Arcy sa lá atá inniu ann bunaithe ar an mhíthuiscint gurb ionann é agus an sloinne Angla-Normannach D'Arcy/Dairsigh a bhí lonnaithe sa Mhí ach go háithrithe ( Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall s.n. Dairsigh). Ach is iomaí samplaí againn ón cheantar seo i dtuaisceart Loch Garman le tabhairt le fios gurb é Ó Dorchaí atá taobh thiar de Darcy ansin. M.sh. 'Art O'Doroghie', 'Gerrot m‘Gerrald O’Dorchye', 'Donell m‘Shane O’Dorchye', 'Gyllpatrick m‘Gerrot O’Dorchye', 'James owre m‘Owin O’Dorchy', 'Shane Sharrawe O’Dorchye' agus 'Murtagh m‘Shane O’Dorchye' (féach: Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV: Ainmneacha na mBailte Fearainn, Co. Loch Garman).
Tá an sloinne céanna le fáil i Ballygiriha/Baile Uí Dhorchaí i gContae Chorcaí, agus i Knockadorraghy/Cnoc Uí Dhorchaí i gContae Mhaigh Eo.
- English
the town(land) of Ó Dorchaí
Ó Dorchaí — surnameThe surname Ó Dorchaí is still found in the area as Darcy in English, but it is often now written as D'Arcy based on the misunderstanding the it has the same origin as the Anglo-Norman surname D'Arcy/Dairsígh which was found in Co. Meath in particular ( Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall s.n. Dairsígh). However, there are many examples of the name in Co. Wexford that show the surname Ó Dorchaí to be behind Darcy in that county. For example, 'Art O'Doroghie', 'Gerrot m‘Gerrald O’Dorchye', 'Donell m‘Shane O’Dorchye', 'Gyllpatrick m‘Gerrot O’Dorchye', 'James owre m‘Owin O’Dorchy', 'Shane Sharrawe O’Dorchye' agus 'Murtagh m‘Shane O’Dorchye' were all residents of the general area around this townland (See: Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV: Townland Names of Co. Wexford).
The same surname is found in Ballygiriha/Baile Uí Dhorchaí in Co. Cork, and Knockadorraghy/Cnoc Uí Dhorchaí in Co. Mayo.
