‘(the) ring(fort) of Saintjohn’
This townland may be denominated from the surname Saint John rather than from the saint. The surname Saint John is an Anglo-Norman locative name from Saint-John-le-Thomas (Manche) (ODFNBI).
“St. John, Singen This family is in Co. Tipperary since the thirteenth century and to a considerable extent became hibernicized: one of the name was transplanted as an Irish papist from St. Johnstown, Co. Tipperary, in 1657, while two of the Co. Wexford branch were bishops of Ferns in the thirteenth century. The name is still fairly numerous in south Tipperary.” (Mac Lysaght, 1969)
In Tipperary the surname has been Gaelicised as An Seánach Cf. Baile an tSeánaigh/Saint Johnstown. In the case of this townland in County Meath, however the Irish form collected from native speakers at the time of the Ordnance Survey was San Seon.
