Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Is deacair aon bhrí a fháscadh as an ainm aisteach seo. Tagraíonn sé, de réir dealraimh, don bheann (350m) ar cheann thoir Dhroim na Ceapaí Airde (féach (#28342)). Féach 1823 ‘Annefield Mount, Antonian Do., Coolenagrena Do.’ faoi ‘Capard’ in TAB. Tuairimíonn Ó Donnabháin gur béarlú é ar An Tóinín. Tá cuma réasúnta air seo ar an gcéad fhéachaint: tagann tóin i gceist i ndornán cnocainmneacha, m.sh. sl Tóin Dubh (#113197), ainm sléibhe os cionn Ghleann Crí i gCill Mhantáin, agus ba bheag a bheadh idir fuaimniú Béarla Antonian * /anˈtoːniən/ agus fuaimniú Gaeilge An Tóinín * /ənˈtoːnʹiːnʹ/. Níl aon sampla eile againn den fhoirm dhíspeagtha seo tóinín, áfach. Dob fhéidir An Tóin Fhionn “the white bottomland” a chur san áireamh freisin.
Ach ní heol dúinn aon sampla eile de Ant- mar bhéarlú ar an t- i dtús logainm Gaeilge (ní hionann is cásanna eile ina ndéantar t- nó n-tosaigh den alt roimh guta nó fh-, ar nós 1609 ‘trougher’ < An tUrchar (#3655), 1652 ‘the Nure’ < An Fheoir (#67254), srl.). Ba dheacair freisin an fhoirm seo a leanas a breacadh ó mhuintir na háite aimsir na Súirbhéireachta a mhíniú, má tá sé cruinn .i. 1837 ‘Aintonians’ pl:AL.
Ní furasta a bhunús a dhéanamh amach más logainm Béarla atá ann ach oiread. Fágtar an t-ainm seo gan aistriú.
