Phós an Sheffield a thug faoi san áit seo iníon de mhuintir Cassan, clann Úgónach a bhfuil roinnt leac le feiscint i seanreilig Chill Cholmáin Bháin (.i. an reilig ar a dtugtar Kyle go háitiúil). The surname Sheffield became associated with this area in the 17th century, when an individual of that name received 142 (plantation) acres in the townland of Cappoley — land which had been confiscated from Thomas Daniell of Timahoe. The Sheffield who settled here married one of the Cassans, a Huguenot family whose gravestones can be found in Kilcolmanbane Cemetery (locally called Kyle). The crossroads was also formerly known as Cassans' Cross, as well as Cappoley Cross. (See Book of Survey and Distribution (*c.*1660), par. The American actor Johnny Sheffield (1931–2010), born John Sheffield Cassan, was descended from this Cappoley family.
