Tá mionchur síos ar sheanteampall Chluain Caoin san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie). Ba é Fiontan, mórnaomh an cheantair seo Laoise, an t-éarlamh.
Maidir leis an bhfoirm 1805 ‘Clonking’ ar léarscáil Cahill, féach go bhfuil samplaí eile de /nʹ/ na Gaeilge > /ŋʹ/ le fáil i gCo. Laoise: e.g. bf Gleann Doimhin > 1838 ‘Glen doy-ing’ (#28279). I nóta aige ar iontráil 1552 anseo deir Ó Corragáin ‘[now] Clonkeen, Clonking, or Cloonking … In Irish the townland and church are called Clooinkeen (Cluain caoin)’ (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 389). Ní léir an foirm Ghaeilge ón gcaint í ‘Clooinkeen’.
Féach an bf Cluain Caoin eile (#27848) a thug ainm do par Cluain Eidhneach agus Cluain Caoin, i mbarúntacht Phort Laoise Thiar.
Is minic láthair eaglasta suite mar a bhfuil cluain-ainm. Féach Ó Cearbhaill, Logainmneacha na hÉireann III.
