Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Logainm aistrithe ó Shasana (samplaí de le fáil i Norfolk agus i Yorkshire) mar ainm ar an teach mór.

    Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Deir Ó Corragáin gurbh é ‘Clooinăvomm’ an t-ainm a bhí ag Gaeilgeoirí Chill Chainnigh ar Knapton lena linn (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 386). Ionannaíonn sé 1561 ‘the wood of Clonoyvam’ le Knapton Wood SO (bf Diméin Mhainistir Laoise) agus cuid de bf Knapton an lae inniu araon. Níl an t-ionannú slán, áfach. Tá na foirmeacha ‘Clone John’, ‘Cloghne John’, ‘Clonejohne’ le fáil freisin i gcáipéisí eile de chuid an 16ú haois. Ní léir cad is bunús leis an logainm seo, ach ní mór an dealramh atá le ‘Cluain a’ Mhaim, the Mother’s lawn’ aige (ibid.).
