Glossary

English (oak-)wood, grove, thicket

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    cold (oak-)wood?

Doirín “little (oak-)wood” atá le feiscint in 1549 ‘Dirreneferis’. Is dócha gurb é -s iolra an Bhéarla atá i ndeireadh na foirme sin, ach díol spéise an mionainm Ferret’s Grove SO 25ʺ díreach taobh thuaidh de seo in bf Raithean an Mhanaigh (#27795). Ní féidir a chur as an áireamh gur ainm pearsanta atá sa cháilitheoir ó cheart agus gur forcheartú é Derryfore ar Derryforis < Doire Fheorais (?) “the (oak-)wood of Feoras (< Piers)” (cf. na logainmneacha Béarla bf [Ballypickas Lower or] Bernardsgrove teorantach laistiar, Ryan’s Grove SO agus Ferret’s Grove SO lastuaidh de).
