Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.

Féach go bhfuil duine den sloinne seo luaite i bparóiste Bhordaíle in Griffith’s Valuation. Cf. 1659 ‘John Geale, gentle[man], Culhill’ Cen. 492 (= id An Chúlchoill, bf Galesquarter). Is dhá shloinne Ghallda ar leith iad Gale agus Gall (cf. Reaney, Dictionary of British Surnames) ó bhunús.

Cf. bf Baile an Bhúnsaígh/Mountgale (#26698) (CC 18). Mheas Mac Giolla Iasachta gurbh ionann Gale i gCúige Laighean agus Mac an Ghaill, sloinne Gaelach a ghlac muintir Stapleton chucu féin.
