Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the streaked, grey quarter(land)?
Réitíonn an chuid is mó den fhianaise stairiúil le ceathrú “quarter(land)”, an focal a thuig cainteoirí dúchais Gaeilge na háite a bheith sa chéad eilimint (1753 ‘Carrowreigh’, 1838 ‘Ceathramhadh’; cf. LSO I 1 faoi par Achadh Bhó (#1412)).
Féach mar sin féin an litriú 1805 ‘Currareagh’; tá talamh fhliuch ghléireach mhóinteach i dtuaisceart agus in oirthear an bhaile fearainn seo (‘Surface water Gleys’, ‘Peaty Gleys’ www.epa.ie), agus is dócha nach féidir currach “wet land” a chur as an áireamh.
