English church

Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    church of (the) thorn?

Seo ceann de na logainmneacha is sine fianaise sa chontae: féach 722 ‘Cilli delgi’ (gin.).

Sampla maith atá anseo, mar sin, ar cill á fhuaimniú le défhoghar sa taobh seo tíre (in ainneoin thuairimiú an Chorragánaigh (1905)). Cf. foirmeacha béarlaithe 1838 in ‘Kyle-’ agus an nóta eolais faoin leagan Gaeilge áitiúil in 1838 ‘cill … ‘i’ as ‘i’ … in English’ (agus an litriú foghrúil Gaeilge 1838 ‘Ceill deilg’ in Ainmleabhar na bParóistí) .i. an défhoghar /~əi/, mar atá san ainm sa lá atá inniu ann (cf. bf Cill Mhaolphóil (#28041)).

Díol spéise na foirmeacha ina seasann an dara heilimint gan aicmitheoir, m.sh. 1303 ‘Delgy’, 1566 ‘Delge’. Is cosúil go ndearnadh an cáilitheoir seo a atuiscint faoi mar gur logainm ann féin é .i. Deilge “(place of) thorns” (cf. bf Deilge (Co 1) (#10732); bf Deilge Bán (#28030)).

    Mionainmneacha
I ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn sholáthair an Corragánach an mionainm spéisiúil Dúiche Uí Néill “the land of Ó Néill”. Cf., b’fhéidir ‘battle-ground of the Oulthachs, or Ulstermen, and the O’Phelans, in 1156 or 1157’ (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 64) faoi bf An tSeanghlais (#27994) i ndeisceart an pharóiste chéanna.

It is certain, from the way this word is invariably pronounced by the Queen's County people, that it signifies not the church, but the Wood, of the Thorn Trees, and that its Irish form is Coill-dealg, the parish church of Kyledellig was very small.
