Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the hamlet of the gelding?
Díol spéise gur cosúil go raibh an bhéim ar chéad siolla an fhocail deiridh: féach an fhoirm Ghaeilge 1838 ‘Gráig a gearrán’ (pl:AL) taobh le litriú na sapar, ‘Gragarren’ (BS:AL). Tá rian den siolla fada -án le sonrú sa tagairt luath 1571 ‘Graiggarrane’, ámh. B’fhéidir gur tháinig an fuaimniú seo faoi thionchar an leagain bhéarlaithe den fhocal garron, a bhí comónta i mBéarla na hÉireann. Cf. bf Cluain Gearráin (#3232) (Ce 18).
Níl an focal garrán “grove” le cur as an áireamh, áfach, in ainneoin an g-caol in 1838 ‘Gráig a gearrán’; cf. 1838 ‘Gearthan duff’ < bf An Garraí Dubh (#27991). Féach go raibh talamh choillteach anseo in aimsir an Down Survey (1655). Cf. bf An Garrán (#27968).
